They call him one of the greatest keyboard players in jazz history and, after being awarded “best keyboardist” 21 times by Down Beat magazine, it’s hard to dispute the claim. Austrian Joe Zawinul helped incorporate electric piano and then synthesisers into jazz mainstream. He founded the groundbreaking Weather Report and was instrumental in its 1970-85 golden era. Since then, his Zawinul Syndicate has forged pioneering and cross-cultural sounds that defy categorisation. His 160 plus albums explore and re-invent jazz, gospel, swing, African and R’n’B music. Joe Zawinul died of cancer on September 11th 2007.
